Google Hangouts on a Mobile Device lets you communicate via phone, video, and text message.
A chat service called Google Hangouts will be phased out in favour of Google Chat, which can be accessed for free by anyone with a Google account. You have until the end of 2021 to migrate your Hangouts data to Chats before they completely replace it. If you’re still using Hangouts, you’ll want to read this.
In order to use the Google Hangouts app, you must have an iOS or Android smartphone or tablet. In addition to free phone and video calls and videoconferencing, it’s simple to set up and use on your computer. It’s compatible with both Windows and Mac desktop and laptop computers, so you can use it on all of your devices at the same time. Even texting is possible with Hangouts.
Getting Started With Google Hangouts
All current iOS and Android smartphones and tablets are compatible with Google Hangouts.
An internet connection is required on your device to use this app. For a one-on-one conversation, the video call feature requires at least 1 Mbps of bandwidth. Make sure your phone camera is up to snuff, too, so that others can clearly see you.
Cellular service can be utilised. A smartphone without an unlimited data plan can rack up the bills quickly.
Hangouts can be used at any time without re-logging in to your Google account after you’ve downloaded the app.
Creating a Hangout is straightforward:
- Open the app and tap the + button.
- Video calls and chats can be started by clicking on the New Video Call and New Conversation buttons.
- Make a list of all the people you’d like to invite to a Hangout. You can select a contact group if your contacts are organised into groups.

Google is phasing out Hangouts in favour of Google Chat, which is integrated with Google Workspace for both businesses and individuals. To get started with Google Workspace, simply enable chat in your Gmail settings and you’ll be able to access all of these services at once.
Google Chat will act as a central hub for your Google Workspace activities once you start using it. For example, if you start a chat “Room” to collaborate with others, you can share a Google Doc or other product via Chat, and your collaborators will be able to access it immediately.
